Isla de La Palma

San AntonioDeze pagina in Nederlands
The festival of San Antonio del Monte is held at the beginning of June each year on the special festival grounds in San Antonio in Garafia in the north-west of La Palma.
It is a festival spread over several days with the highlight, and therefore the busiest day, on the Saturday.
There is a wide range of activities based around a show of animals from the island. Cattle, oxen, horses, dogs, sheep, goats and pigs are all present for inspection by the public.
A statue of the patron saint, San Antonio, is taken in a procession between the rows of animals and the animals are blessed. There is a wine competition between local vineyards and between the islands cheese makers.
There are religious services in the tiny church and music and dancing every day, a fairground and stalls from local agricultutral companies, tourist information and usually a live radio program from Cadena Sur.
Next to the festival grounds is a large camping area where many people, mainly young people, camp for a few nights and are generally 'sociable'.
Parking can be a problem on the Saturday so expect quite a long walk to the festival grounds.
