Orange, Mandarin, Lemon and Lime are al grown on La Palma, mainly in the 'middle' zone between 200 and 700 meters above sea level. Most are family owned and for own use or selling to the supermarkets, cafes, bars and restaurants. The fresh orange juice that you get in the cafes, bars and restaurants will normally be freshly squeezed from oranges grown on the island. The main variety grown on the island for commercial purposes was introduced from mainland Spain. Sometimes you will find a local variety whihc is nmuch sweater but has massive thorns up to 7cm long which make it less interesting for commercial purposes;-) |
