Looking into the Caldera from the Roque de Los Muchachos
Colourful layers of lava are criss-crossed by lava dykes.
Geology note: Dykes are formed when liquid lava pushes its way through the existing layes of rock and solidified into walls of hard stone. The softer lava around them has eroded away over the centuries leaving the hard rock walls standing.

A rock face of mulit-coloured tufa (solidified volcanic ash) above the road at Morro Negro.
The different coloured layers have different chemical compositions. The layers show signs of the erosion that took place between each eruption.

A thin rock wall protrudes out over the outer side of the Caldera near Morro Negro.
Geology note: The harder layer of rock at the top prevents erosion of the softer rock directly underneath it. The rest has been washed away leaving this knife edge.
